The Atlantic Alliance: Diverging Interests, Converging Policies

Security Talk mit Prof. Ethan Kapstein Ph.D. (Princeton)

22.10.2026 16:00 Uhr – 18:00 Uhr

Unfortunately, Prof. Ethan Kapstein has fallen ill, and the lecture must be postponed.

Recent years have witnessed considerable tensions between the United States and its NATO allies, and there are growing concerns within Europe as to whether the U.S. would abide by its Article 5 commitments to defend the continent. But in this talk Ethan B. Kapstein (Princeton University) will provide a surprisingly optimistic perspective on the state of the trans-Atlantic alliance. Drawing from economic theories of alliances, he will argue that strategic divergences in fact are leading to increasing investments in military capability, to the benefit of the alliance as a whole.

Presenter: Prof. Ethan Kapstein Ph.D. (Princeton)
Moderation: Prof. Dr. Paul W. Thurner (LMU)

Prof. Ethan Kapstein is Executive Director of the Empirical Studies of Conflict Project at Princeton University.
