New Article by Paul W. Thurner and coauthors has been published in the Journal of Political Analysis

17.01.2025

The article introduces the Signed Exponential Random Graph Model (SERGM), an extension of ERGMs for analyzing signed networks with positive and negative ties. It applies structural balance theory to explain dynamics like “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” in international relations. The model is designed for both static and dynamic networks, providing insights into link formation in systems like inter-state cooperation and conflict. Empirical results reveal evidence of structural balance in global political relationships.
