Governance is no longer the sole domain of states. International organisations of all sorts, informal task forces, regulatory agencies and private actors are also involved in global governance. The seminar seeks to map and analyse this transnational dimension of governance: What are the conditions enabling the rise of global governance? Who are the principle subjects and objects? What are the modes of global governance? Is global governance effective? Is it legitimate? And how does power play out? The seminar has two main goals: First, to make familiar with relevant theoretical debates and concepts (a good knowledge of and keen interest in IR-theories is crucial for successful participation). Second, to apply these theories and concepts to empirical cases. Students will carry out their own empirical research and present their results in a concluding one-day workshop (date: Sat, 31 January 2009).
