Dissertationsprojekt: Exploring party behavior in varying circumstances

The main argument of the research project is that explanations of party behaviour are contingent upon type of party and context, because both variables strongly affect a party’s own strategic considerations on the one hand and the degree to which it is able to act accordingly on the other hand. To test this idea, party behaviour for different actors in varying environments is examined. Concerning characteristics the party level, the study rests its focus especially on differences between mainstream and challenger parties. With regard to context conditions, it places particular weight on different channels of party communication (mass media, party manifestos and social media). The project contributes to the understanding of party competition in two ways. First, it provides a systematic empirical assessment of the validity of existing insights in varying situations. Second, it advances the theoretical understanding of party behaviour by stressing that strategic considerations of political parties vary between different types of parties and play out differently depending on the platform on which they compete.
