New publication: "Together we stand? Transnational solidarity in the EU in times of crises" by Alexia Katsanidou, Ann-Kathrin Reinl and Christina Eder

05.08.2021

Are we prepared to lend our fellow citizens in other EU member states a helping hand in times of crises? In their article “Together we stand? Transnational solidarity in the EU in times of crises” recently published in European Union Politics, Alexia Katsanidou, Ann-Kathrin Reinl and Christina Eder explore EU citizens’ willingness to grant financial assistance to other EU members against the backdrop of three different crisis scenarios: a national bankruptcy, an unprecedented influx of migrants and a pandemic. Alexia, Ann-Kathrin and Christina fielded surveys in Greece and Germany in July and August 2020 and find that while respondents were most willing to throw their fellow EU citizens a financial lifeline during a pandemic, Greek respondents generally showed higher support for transnational solidarity than their German counterparts. Overall, their findings suggest that “the willingness to jointly mitigate the economic consequences of the pandemic is generally high in this time of political and economic uncertainty, even if respondents’ evaluation of the EU’s future looks rather bleak in both countries.”
