World Politics in Media: Come for the Methods, Stay for the Insight

Workshop in December, Sign Up!

The Geschwister-Scholl-Institut of Political Science is looking forward to welcoming Professor Michal Parízek from Charles University Prague to Munich at the beginning of December. As part of his stay at the Geschwister-Scholl-Institute, Professor Parízek will be holding a workshop entitled "World Politics in Media: Come for the Methods, Stay for the Insight".

The workshop represents an opportunity for its participants to explore the fascinating world of international politics as received in mass media and learn about the various social science methods to research this agenda. The workshop thus has a two-fold target: 1) to help its participants learn about research design and intermediate and more advanced research methods, in particular in the context of big data analysis of media content, and 2) to help its participants navigate the vast field of communication and information flows on the global scale. The workshop is complemented with individual lecturer-student sessions aimed at a discussion of research ideas and issues of workshop participants, especially suitable for students at the stage of designing or conducting their thesis research. The workshop builds heavily on the pioneering work conducted within the project GLOWIN (Global Flows of Political Information) at Charles University, which is led by Professor Parízek.

The workshop is open to students at the BA, MA, and PhD level. No specific prior knowledge of research methods is required for participants, but some understanding of key concepts and issues in research design, and familiarity with the basics of quantitative and/or qualitative research methods will present an advantage. The workshop is especially suited for students who are at the stage of designing or conducting their BA, MA or PhD research in the field of international politics (broadly defined) and interested in the role and functioning of mass media.

The workshop schedule is as follows:

  • December 1, 16:00-18:00 s.t. in Room C007: Meet the Prof & Discuss Your Ideas
  • December 2, 09:00-15:00 s.t. in Room C007: Global Flows of Political Information

Please sign up for the workshop by writing an email to: Please do so as soon as possible but no later than November 29, 2022.
