Workshop “Doing Democracy? Democracy and Populism in the EU after the "Refugee Crisis”
The Center for Advanced Studies at LMU (CAS LMU) cordially invites you
to the workshop
DOING DEMOCRACY? DEMOCRACY AND POPULISM IN THE EU AFTER THE “REFUGEE
on 21 and 22 february 2019 at CAS in Seestraße 13.
International Workshop organized by Dr. Astrid Séville (CAS Junior
Researcher in Residence).
The coping with migration has changed the political landscape: former
socioeconomic cleavages have been substituted by a transnational one.
This cleavage gives rise to potential anti-system parties and populists
that share their fierce opposition towards integration and migration by
challenging core dimensions of democracy:
the guarantee of basic rights and freedoms, the general right to vote,
and the requirement of consent to all legislation.
The workshop will study today's patterns of conflict and coordination in
the EU and discuss the effects of the refugee crisis on democracy –
both within the member states and in the EU.
SPEAKERS ARE: Daniela Braun (LMU), R. Daniel Kelemen (Rutgers
University), Michael Koß (LMU), Christian Kreuder-Sonnen (WZB),
Hanspeter Kriesi (EUI Florence), Berthold Rittberger (LMU), Stefan
Wallaschek (Universität Bremen), Fabio Wolkenstein (Aarhus University)
